When it comes to things to do in Harrogate, visiting one of the amazing spas is a must! Harrogate’s reputation as a spa town dates back to the discovery of its mineral-rich waters in the 16th century and visitors flocked here for the restorative properties of the waters, earning Harrogate the nickname ‘The English Spa’. If you’re keen to learn more about Harrogate’s spa history, we’d recommend a visit to the Royal Pump Room Museum, which showcases artefacts and stories from the town’s spa heyday.

The Turkish Baths

If you’re looking for a traditional spa experience, we couldn’t recommend the Turkish Baths more. This iconic venue reflects the grandeur of Victorian bathhouses with its ornate tiles, tall arches, and calming atmosphere. You can choose from a range of treatments, including facials, massages, and body scrubs, or enjoy the thermal suite.

The Valley Gardens are English Heritage Grade II listed so you can expect a beautifully maintained space. Situated in Low Harrogate, this popular park is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a family day out. With its historic Sun Pavilion, floral displays, and children’s play areas, Valley Gardens is a serene escape. The gardens are open all year round and offer a range of outdoor games including crazy golf, tennis courts, pitch and putt golf, a boating pool and paddling pool. 

RHS Garden Harlow Carr

Just a short drive from the town centre, Harlow Carr is a haven for gardening enthusiasts. Managed by the Royal Horticultural Society, this garden showcases vibrant borders, woodland walks, and a delightful Bettys Tea Room. 

Ripley Castle and Gardens

Located just three miles from Harrogate, Ripley Castle is a historic gem. Tour the stately home, explore the walled gardens, or enjoy a scenic walk along the castle’s lake.

A Harrogate institution since 1919, Bettys is famous for its afternoon teas, Yorkshire curd tarts and signature tea blends. With elegant interiors and impeccable service, it’s no wonder people flock to visit! We’d definitely recommend popping by for one of their delicious sweet treats.

If you’re in town for a celebration and looking for somewhere special, The Ivy is always a fantastic choice! Located in the Royal Baths, it has beautiful interiors which set the mood. Known for classic British dishes with a contemporary twist, you can expect amazing food too.

You’ll find Farmhouse under the Everyman cinema off Station Parade. Here you can enjoy beautifully made breakfasts, burgers, salads, and seafood – they also do amazing vegan and vegetarian dishes!

Parking in Harrogate

Parking in Harrogate is hassle-free with a range of options to suit all needs. Whether you’re planning a quick stop or a full day of exploration, here’s where to park. 

Town Centre Parking 

Harrogate’s town centre features numerous car parks, including the multi-story Victoria Car Park and Jubilee Car Park, both conveniently located near shopping streets and attractions. 

On-Street Parking 

Metered on-street parking is available, typically operating between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Some areas offer free parking after 6:00 PM, perfect for evening visits to restaurants or theatres. 

Private Parking

We also have a number of holiday lets in Harrogate which offer private parking which is a real bonus when staying in the town centre! These properties can be viewed here.

Getting Around Harrogate

By bus 

Harrogate’s efficient bus network makes getting around a breeze. Operated mainly by The Harrogate Bus Company, these buses provide excellent services to key destinations. Day passes are available for unlimited travel, starting at around £4.50. These are great for exploring multiple areas in one day. For longer stays, consider weekly passes for convenience. 

The town centre is well-served, with buses connecting key areas like the train station, Valley Gardens, and nearby destinations including Knaresborough and Ripon. The most popular route is the 36, which links Harrogate to Leeds and Ripon with luxurious double-deckers featuring Wi-Fi and USB charging. Harrogate buses also serve nearby attractions such as Fountains Abbey and Brimham Rocks, making it easy to expand your itinerary without a car. 

By train 

The train network in Harrogate is efficient and connects the town to key destinations across Yorkshire and beyond. Located in the heart of the town, Harrogate train station is within walking distance of shopping streets, restaurants, and Valley Gardens.  

Regular trains run to Leeds (30 minutes) and York (35 minutes), offering convenient access to larger cities. While Harrogate itself doesn’t provide direct access to the Dales by train, you can easily connect via Leeds or York. For seamless travel, consider a Yorkshire Rover Ticket, which provides unlimited train travel across the region for one or more days. 

By bike

If cycling is on your list of things to do in Harrogate, you’re in luck as there are a number of fantastic paths and loops to enjoy. The Nidderdale Greenway is a 4-mile traffic-free path linking Harrogate to Ripley Castle perfect for families and for leisurely rides. The Harrogate to Knaresborough Loop is a scenic ride with opportunities to stop at riverside pubs and historic sites.

Many attractions, such as Valley Gardens and RHS Garden Harlow Carr, have bike racks for secure parking. Some buses and trains allow bikes onboard, though it’s wise to check availability and restrictions ahead of time. 

Several local shops, such as Chevin Cyles, offer bike hire, including e-bikes for those who prefer a little extra assistance. 

By taxi 

Taxis are a convenient option for getting around Harrogate, particularly for late-night travel or trips to areas not well-served by public transport. Blue Line Taxis and Mainline Taxis are two of the most reputable operators in Harrogate. They offer pre-booking services via phone or app. Uber operates in the area, but coverage may vary. 

Taxi ranks are located at Harrogate Railway Station, Cambridge Street, and the Royal Hall Theatre. Taxis are readily available during the day and evening, but booking in advance is recommended during peak hours or major events. 

Taxi fares are metered, with standard rates for town centre trips and set rates for airport transfers or longer journeys, such as to Leeds Bradford Airport.
