Property Details

The Space
Old Reading Room oozes character and charm throughout its spacious rooms. Retaining many features of the historic past, including beams and wooden floors, it is bursting with elegance and makes the perfect holiday let to gather with friends and family.

The beautiful and impressively spacious living room has a feature fireplace housing an attractive wood burner, with period plate shelving around all the walls, used as storage for books. This is a delightful room and the hub of the home.

The individually designed, bespoke country kitchen has been custom made by a local kitchen maker and has granite and solid wood worktops as well as a large island and butler sink.

A fabulous wide central staircase with polished timber handrails leads to the first-floor landing with two skylights providing oodles of natural light and the exposed beams accentuate the historic nature of this gorgeous home.

The property features three bedrooms – one king, one double, and one twin. The master king features an ensuite shower room, whilst the remaining bedrooms have access to the main bathroom in the property.

A trundle bed is available in the master bedroom at Old Reading which can be made up upon request. When made up, the occupancy of the property will be increased to 8.

The family bathroom offers a bathtub with separate shower, WC and basin, while the ensuite is home to a walk-in shower. On the ground floor, there is a third bathroom which acts as a wet room.

From the front gate, a long path meanders to the front of the property. To the side elevation there is a gorgeous south-facing, cottage-style garden, enjoying the sun from early morning until late evening, visited by barn owls at night. A separate enclosed garden can be found off from the cottage garden. Great for dogs, this is a generously sized space.

Neighborhood
Old Reading Room is a beautiful, detached stone property set in the tranquil coastal village of Lesbury, close to the stunning Northumbrian heritage coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a lovely 20-minute walk alongside the Aln River to the beach at Alnmouth, a picture postcard village with pubs, restaurants and coffee shops, and where you may spot a local artist or photographer capturing the beautiful sweeping golden beach and river estuary.

Alnwick, the market town where the Duke and Duchess reside in the famous castle, is only four miles away. Here you can explore some of the cobbled streets, cafés and alleyways whilst browsing the shops and stopping off for lunch. Three historic castles are within a 10-mile radius of the Old Reading Room, ensuring your days out are within easy driving distance.

Amble is a friendly small harbour town with a lovely Sunday market, which is popular with both locals and visitors, and you can browse the little shopping pods, too, picking up a local treasure to take home.

When visiting the area, Craster Kippers are a must and can be bought at the old smokery in Craster village whilst out exploring.

Northumberland is a diverse county with a stunning National Dark Sky Park, rugged moorlands, hills and valleys, Hadrian’s Wall, the Angel of the North and beautiful beaches, some of which are perfect for surfing or simply rock pooling and relaxing. A trip to Old Reading Room will leave you relaxed, chilled and looking forward to the next time you can visit.

Getting Around
Just a 10-minute walk away from Old Reading Room is Alnmouth train station, where a trip to Edinburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed, York or Newcastle is possible for a completely different day out using the East Coast Mainline.

We booked this months in advance and looked forward to it. A week before we went Host and Stay demanded fees for insurance against damage. The messages were badly worded and confusing and threatening. We bought the key code unless we paid it. How much do we all like hidden fees from greedy agents??? Not a lot. Spoiled the happy atmosphere but the house was great. Just use a different website to Booking.com.

Good location to explore the coast, Hadrian’s wall and Holy island. Well kept and comfortable stay.

The booking site informed us that a £250 damage deposit was required and that after a couple of weeks it would be refunded in full if all was well. After a couple of weeks it was returned to us minus a £10 admin fee. Not happy. We also had to go off site to pay the £250 via a portal before the keys were released to us, something that the booking site is always asking guests not to do.
There was thick dust under the bed I was sleeping in. I have a photo but can't find anywhere to upload it.
I will never book to stay in a property managed by 'Host and Stay' again.
